The best free Loom alternatives, with no 5-minute limit
Loom's free plan stops each recording at 5 minutes and 25 videos. Here are free screen recorders, each checked on its own site, and where each one falls short.
Loom's free plan, Starter, allows 25 videos per person and 5 minutes per recording, at up to 720p, according to its pricing page. That is enough for a quick note, and short for a walkthrough. Record is free with no time limit and no video cap: it records your screen and camera in the browser, and nothing is uploaded. The honest difference: Record does not host your video. You download the file and share it yourself, where Loom gives you a link.

What to look for
- No time cap. A walkthrough or a bug report often runs past five minutes.
- Your face in a corner. A camera bubble makes a recording feel like a conversation.
- A quick trim. Cutting the fumbling start and the reach for the stop button is most of the editing people do.
- Where the video goes. A hosted link is convenient. A file on your own device is private. Know which one you are choosing.
1. OpenApps Record
Record is ours, so judge it accordingly. It is free, with no time limit, no video cap and no account.
- Record your screen, a window or a tab, with your camera in a bubble you can move.
- Your microphone, plus tab or system sound where the browser shares it.
- Pause, resume, and trim the start and end.
- MP4 or WebM files, kept on your device until you delete them.
- Camera-only and audio-only modes, on phones too.
- If the tab closes partway, it recovers the recording.
Where it falls short: Record does not host videos, so there is no share link, no comments and no view counts. You download the file and send it through a drive, a chat or email. Most phone browsers do not allow screen recording, so on a phone it records the camera and audio only. There are no transcripts and no editing beyond trimming.
2. OBS Studio
OBS Studio is free and open source, for Windows, Mac and Linux, and it is what many people use for streaming. It can record almost anything, with scenes, overlays and several sources at once. The cost is setup: it takes some learning before your first clean recording.
3. The recorder already on your computer
On a Mac, the Screenshot app records the whole screen or part of it: press Shift, Command and 5. On Windows, the Snipping Tool records an area of the screen: press the Windows logo key, Shift and R. Both are free and already installed. Neither adds a camera bubble.
4. Loom's free plan
Loom is polished, and its share links, comments and reactions are why teams use it. If your videos are short and you make fewer than 25, the free plan may be all you need.
The short version
For a long walkthrough you will send as a file, use Record, or OBS Studio if you want full control. For short videos your team watches by link, Loom's free plan is fine until you hit 5 minutes or 25 videos. For a one-page answer, see the free Loom alternative.
